Short description of the project

The project provides for the supply of specialised equipment for carrying out dredging on the Danube - dredger transport tubing, shallot transport tubing, pontoon and maneuvering ship.

Description of the project and objectives

The common Bulgarian-Romanian section of the Danube River/RCE 845.650 km 374.100/ characterises many critical areas in which there is a lack of depths in certain water courses. This creates difficulties and imposes restrictions on the shipping companies, often with negative financial implications for shippers, freight forwarders, ship owners, etc. The carrying out of dredging activities to ensure the gauges of the shipping lines in line with the recommendations of the Danube Commission, the vessels and equipment delivered to the project, is one of the main activities of the IAEDP, regulated by its own rules of procedure, as well as the implementation of the 1949 Danube Navigation Convention and the Agreement between Bulgaria and Romania on the maintenance and improvement of the fairway at the Bulgarian-Romanian section of the Danube since 1955. The available dredging equipment is physically obsolete and cannot adequately maintain the ship on the most critical parts. The project will update the EACI’s technical base for the execution of bottom working in the fairway. The dredger (with a payload capacity of 4 000 m³/h) and the overburden removal pipes will increase several times the productivity of dredging spoil. This will allow a larger amount of dredging to be made for less time, thus also increasing the effect of timely dredging and faster activation of the river’s self-flushing to maintain the necessary depths at medium and lower levels. For shorter time, the amount of dredging as defined by the Technology Plan will be carried out in a specific critical area. The ship will carry out several functions - ensure that the dredging equipment from place to site and vice versa runs off the dredging equipment — dredge, pontoon and pipe forming. After completion of the work, the load pipes will be collected by the site. During the execution of work in the dredging area, the non-self-propelled shallots from the dredge area to the landing area of the dredged ground will be shunted. The project pontonote is an intermediate body in the process of loading the dredged mass from the dredging spoiling, and the dredged table is transferred from the dredging facility to the ponton shallot. A capacity of 600 m³ is suitably dimensioned for the nominal dredging capacity of the dredging equipment.

The objectives of the project are:

Ensure depths in the Bulgarian section of navigation on the Bulgarian section for the maintenance of the RTM 610 to the Danube River 375 under the Danube Navigation Convention of 1949, Agreement between the Republic of Bulgaria and Romania on the maintenance and improvement of the fairway at the Bulgarian-Romanian section of the Danube since 1955 and the recommendations of the Danube Commission.

Deepening of port areas, natural or artificial nurseries, as well as approaches to all of the above.

Results, achievements, impact

Creating the conditions for the implementation of the international arrangements for the improvement of navigation conditions on the Bulgarian section of the Danube in the context of the Convention on the Regime of Navigation on the Danube Region — 1948, Agreement between the Governments of the Republic of Bulgaria and Romania on the maintenance and improvement of the fairway at the Bulgarian-Romanian section of the Danube since 1956, Memorandum of Understanding on the development of the pan-European Transport Corridor VII/River Danube — 2002 and the PPA.

A reduction in the number of critical plots with depths below 25 dm.

Increase the freezing rate of the ship’s road (on a multiannual basis), in line with the recommendations of the Danube Commission.

Reduced number of critical sections with depths will contribute to normal traffic of cargo, passengers and mail on water and trends in increasing them.
